How it works

The exact mechanism of action for midazolam is not fully understood, but it is thought to involve potentiation of GABAergic neurotransmission resulting from binding at the benzodiazepine site of the GABA A receptor.

How the body breaks it down

Midazolam is primarily metabolized by liver and intestinal cytochrome P450 3A4 (CYP3A4) to its pharmacologic active metabolite, 1-hydroxy midazolam (also termed α-hydroxy-midazolam).

Serious warning

WARNING: RISKS FROM CONCOMITANT USE WITH OPIOIDS; ABUSE, MISUSE, AND ADDICTION; and DEPENDENCE AND WITHDRAWAL REACTIONS Concomitant use of benzodiazepines and opioids may result in profound sedation, respiratory depression, coma, and death.

Must not be used by
  • NAYZILAM is contraindicated in patients with: Known hypersensitivity to midazolam.
  • Acute narrow-angle glaucoma [see Warnings and Precautions (5.8) ].
  • Patients with hypersensitivity to midazolam ( 4 ) Patients with acute narrow-angle glaucoma ( 4 )
