Allopurinol is a structural analogue of the natural purine base, hypoxanthine.

Allopurinol acts on purine catabolism, without disrupting the biosynthesis of purines.

How the body breaks it down

Allopurinol is metabolized to the corresponding xanthine analogue, oxypurinol (alloxanthine), which also is an inhibitor of xanthine oxidase.

How it leaves the body

Allopurinol tablets and its primary active metabolite, oxipurinol, are eliminated by the kidneys.

Must not be used by
  • Allopurinol tablets are contraindicated in patients with a history of hypersensitivity reaction to allopurinol or to any of the ingredients of allopurinol tablets.
  • Known hypersensitivity to allopurinol or to any of the ingredients of allopurinol tablets.
Most common side effects

The most frequent adverse reaction to allopurinol tablets is skin rash.
