How it works

Famotidine is a competitive inhibitor of histamine-2 (H 2 ) receptors.

The primary clinically important pharmacologic activity of famotidine is inhibition of gastric secretion.

How it leaves the body

Famotidine is eliminated by renal (65 to 70%) and metabolic (30 to 35%) routes.

With food

Bioavailability may be slightly increased by food, or slightly decreased by antacids; however, these effects are of no clinical consequence.

How to take it

These directions are for this exact strength and form. Another one is different.

  • adults and children 12 years and over:
  • to relieve symptoms, swallow 1 tablet with a glass of water.
  • Do not chew. to prevent symptoms, swallow 1 tablet (of 10 mg) with a glass of water at any time from 15 to 60 minutes before eating food or drinking beverages that cause heartburn to prevent symptoms, swallow 1 tablet (of 20 mg) with a glass of water at any time from 10 to 60 minutes before eating food or drinking beverages that cause heartburn
  • do not use more than 2 tablets in 24 hours
  • children under 12 years:
  • ask a doctor
