How the body breaks it down

Approximately 52% of an oral or intravenous dose of moxifloxacin is metabolized via glucuronide and sulfate conjugation.

How it leaves the body

The sulfate conjugate (M1) accounts for approximately 38% of the dose, and is eliminated primarily in the feces.

With food

Co-administration with a high fat meal (that is, 500 calories from fat) does not affect the absorption of moxifloxacin.

Serious warning

Fluoroquinolones, including moxifloxacin tablets, may exacerbate muscle weakness in patients with myasthenia gravis.

Must not be used by
  • Moxifloxacin tablets are contraindicated in persons with a history of hypersensitivity to moxifloxacin or any member of the quinolone class of antibacterials [see Warnings and Precautions ( 5.8 )].
  • Known hypersensitivity to moxifloxacin tablets or other quinolones ( 4, 5.8 )
Most common side effects

The most common adverse reactions (>0.3%) leading to discontinuation with the 400 mg oral doses were nausea, diarrhea, dizziness, and vomiting.
